Super Night Shot
The Gob Squad
ACMI, Federation Square
03 – 05 February, 9.00pm
Tickets: $25/$22/$20

If you’re out in the CBD later this week, be on the look out for a bunch of dudes wearing animal masks and wielding video cameras: they might just make you the star of their new film…

British-German art collective, Gob Squad, are about to bring it to Melbourne with their infamous ‘war on anonymity’ guerilla film project, Super Night Shot.

Each night at 8pm, from 03 to 05 February, the renegade filmmakers will start off in the ACMI cinemas before being unleashed onto unsuspecting Melburnians as the crew, armed with synchronised cameras and watches, hit the streets of our CBD to make an hour long film starring…well, everyone who’s out on the streets at that particular time. Scared yet?

The filmmakers will battle the elements, the city streets and the laneways to film their adventures: whatever and whomever they may come across before racing back to the cinema exactly one hour later for the 9pm screening of their four unedited, uncut films, side-by-side, with sound being mixed live – yes…live. As in right there and then.

Described as being “an exciting blend of documentary, performative art, social comment and theatre sports”, the process is largely spontaneous, although certain actions, tasks, stunts and dialogue must be used at particular times to give the film a loose structure. A montage of Melbourne, the project, which began in Berlin in 1994, aims to reconnect the public with their city streets – and as every night will be completely different from the last, the resulting film is sure to be spectacularly unpredictable. And you, the ordinary Melburnian going about your business, could become the star of a very hilarious show.
