Marc Maron
Melbourne Town Hall – Supper Room
April 12 – April 24
Tickets: $23.50 – $31

You really can’t go wrong with an American comedian who takes the piss out of his own countrymen, his own religion and his own life. I picked up on this pretty quickly when Marc Maron spent the first 20 minutes of the show talking about his cats, the weird names he has for them and the aggressive and emotional relationship they share. This is all broken up with Marc’s love for a good abstract tangent.

The first 20 minutes sets you up for the rest of the show, obscure stories about Marc’s life, his observations and a few one liners here and there. Sitting atop a bar stool, Maron treats the show almost like a deep and meaningful with 150 friends rather than a commercial show to an audience. You almost feel like you have to yell out “it’s ok, you’ll be fine” but then sneakily giggle under your breath. The occasional topic was a little too perverse for some, and I overhead “oh did he just say that?” a few times throughout the show. Marc holds nothing back, and speaks from the heart giving us an assurance that 90% of what he says is completely true – maybe not so common these days with comedians.

Marc adheres to a style of self loathing, lonely melancholy comedy that may not have you jumping out of your seat with laughter but is entertaining nevertheless. His style may not be to everyone’s taste, but he’s worth the money.

Here is a clip of Marc Maron in action…
