Musical comedy has had a surge of success over the past few years. From Flight Of The Conchords through to Glee it could be said that everyone is at it. So, it is little surprise to see that Die Roten Punkte’s faux-German take on the ever so eccentric Jack and Meg White has packed out The Hi-Fi.

With just a drum and two guitars to utilise, Astrid and Otto Rot spin their way onto stage and launch into their first song. Though the comedy lyrics tickle, they are far from laugh out loud and an air of curiosity fills the audience. Suddenly Otto goes wrong and Astrid stops mid song to criticise her lover brother. Her abrupt manner is comedy gold and it becomes immediately clear just why Die Roten Punkte have become global sensations.

While their characters are sourced from the Whites, no one is safe from satire as everyone from Brian Eno through to The Ramones come into question. While Astrid provides the laugh out loud moments, her extrovert presence is matched perfectly by the subtle Otto. Completely besotted by his sexually provocative sister lover, he falls to pieces as she reveals her suspected pregnancy was nothing more than bad wind. In doing so, the duo proved they could manage what many comedians fail at, they can use comedy to move an audience to tears.

Die Roten Punkte deserves every ounce of its praise. Astrid and Otto Rot command attention throughout and take an audience on a tumultuous journey. Within 90 minutes the duo have taken their audience on so many twists and turns that reality has lost all meaning and time has disappeared at double pace.

Post encore there were still screams for more and every member of the audience left with a smile on their face.
