It has to be one of the busiest strips in Melbourne: put your hand up if you haven’t stumbled all tipsy-like around Gertrude Street after a night at the Builders Arms…

…or stood around indecisively with your mates, trying to figure out where to eat, or eaten breakfast at one of the cafes at 3pm or sat in a coffee shop for hours on end, perving on the hot hipster waiters (ok, that last one’s probably just me. Also, if you put your hand up at all, you probably shouldn’t be here reading this right now)…

For ten days over July, a 1km stretch of Gertrude Street will be transformed into an outdoor gallery for the Gertrude Street Projection Festival. Projection artists including Yandell Walton, Ian de Gruchy, Nick Azidis, Lindsay Cox, Olaf Myer, Kit Webster and Rowena Martinich will light up the strip with their ‘art interventions’, a series of artworks projected onto the street’s windows, laneways, footpaths, trees and buildings. Greg Giannis will produce an installation to light up the Atherton Gardens Housing estate and the little tackers from the Fitzroy Learning Network will produce a stop-motion animation for the festival.

So grab your blankie or snuggie (what? Everyone’s got a snuggie…) and your mates and go for a wander along Gertrude Street and see it in an unexpectedly different light…and of course, don’t forget to stop in at the Builders on the way…
