It kinda sucks growing up on the conservative side of Melbourne, there are no REAL pubs, the food is toned down and nothing much happens. Oh we do have a massive crime problem though, you know…tax evasion, securities fraud etc…

Being stuck on “the right side of the river” also means that it is a fair hike over to Beatbox Kitchen on Friday night for a burger, worthy of the trip nonetheless.

Last week Raph Rashid, Beatbox Kitchen’s main man, unveiled his new creation: the Taco Truck. I would say until about a year ago I was only subject to Old El Paso taco kits and was well and truly put off them from a young age until a soft taco at Mamasita changed my mind a little. If the tacos at the Taco Truck were as good as the burgers from Beatbox Kitchen then I would be moving to the northern suburbs. Stat. Set up on a Friday night in Rathdowne Street right alongside the Beatbox truck, Taco Truck drew an unsurprisingly large crowd, with the local park filled with people from all over the shop enjoying a few beers while waiting for their meals.

When I visited, two types of tacos were on offer, but a little birdy tells me there is also a beef option flying around.  The fish taco features two golden pieces of fried flaky white fish, slaw, lime and mayo and for the the veggos, a soft taco filled with Jalapeño ricotta, mushroom, slaw, spring onion and salsa verde; both of these are a perfect match for the accompanied hot sauce.  On a busy night, expect a bit of a wait – but if you’ve got some mates to hang out with and maybe a few sneaky cold ones, then an evening snuggled up to the vans is a uniquely Melbourne experience. Just come visit the East side!
