(woman)
Dave Callan
Lithuanian Club
September 24 – October 9
Tickets: $16 – $19
Known largely as that hairy guy with the beard, Dave Callan is a familiar face to most Australians, having been on TV shows from Rove to Spicks and Specks and a whole lot in between. As part of his show (woman) for the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Callan asked 100 women 100 questions ranging from the deep and meaningful, right down to the dark and dirty. After gathering the results and analysing his findings, Callan came up with this show…
While the concept is an intriguing one, there did seem to be something missing. Having based the entire show around the answers of the women, Callan was a little too reliant on their comic skills rather than his own. He added only a few of his own comic stylings but made full use of an ever so high tech slide show to get the full effect of pie charts and pictures! But there did seem to be something lacking as he seemed mainly to stick to reading answers from a screen rather than manufacturing comedy himself.
Having said that, there are still quite a few laughs to be had. Or in Dave’s words, LOLs. As well as some pretty interesting and entertaining information about what the women of Australia really think about men. If he hadn’t turned it into a comedy show, Callan could probably host a seminar on what women really want and have been a world class hit with the boys. Whatever the short falls, a relaxed atmosphere and some pretty open interviewees make (woman) a great addition to the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Get yourself down to the Lithuanian Club to see it for yourself before it’s all over on the 9th of October.
